Case study : REF 2023 / Waste management in the events sector
On August 28 and 29, our Onet Cleaning and Associated Services teams provided waste management and clean-up services for the major event organized by Medef for the start of the 2023 academic year, the Rencontre des Entrepreneurs de France #REF 2023 at the Paris-Lonchamp racecourse. Here's a look back at the event industry expertise applied by Yann Gouala, Operations Manager of the Paris Rive gauche agency, and his team, to ensure the comfort and satisfaction of participants.
Ecological and environmental issues
Medef, 70% of whose member companies are very small businesses, is France's leading network of entrepreneurs. For its flagship back-to-school event in 2023, held at the Paris-Lonchamp racecourse, it set high standards in terms of respect for the environment. For this event, which was attended by over 10,000 people, our teams not only took charge of cleaning services, but also organized waste management.

Expert teams for cleanliness and waste management in the events sector
To guarantee a level of service and comfort for participants that lived up to Medef's expectations, Yan Gouala, Operations Manager at Onet Cleaning and Associated Services Paris Rive gauche, put together a team well-versed in the specifics of the events sector. In the run-up to the event, the Onet Cleaning and Associated Services teams worked in close collaboration with the organization's teams to come up with a solution adapted to current environmental and regulatory issues.
Waste management was the subject of a study identifying the types of waste encountered during the various phases of the event (assembly, operation, dismantling), while taking into account the specific characteristics of the site and the requirements of the organizers. We supported our customer in sizing and setting up the sorting system (sorting bins, ashtrays, bins, skips), collecting and re-sorting waste, and managing our partner's evacuation of sorted waste to local recycling facilities.

The aim of our intervention is to optimize sorting performance and recovery rates by guaranteeing traceability of flows and detailed reporting on the service provided. "We placed a sufficient number of sorting bins throughout the site so that they were easily accessible by participants. Sorting was then organized in 4 phases: collecting all waste on site, grouping it at intermediate points, transferring it by electric vehicles to the centralized waste collection center, where it is further sorted to correct participants' sorting errors, and finally storing it in skips and bins by waste category before being removed for recovery," he continues. The Rencontre des Entrepreneurs de France #REF 2023 has indeed taken its CSR approach to its logical conclusion, as it wanted to ensure that the waste is then recovered.
"On this type of event, which welcomes several thousand participants, there are many hazards," continues Yann Gouala. " That's why, prior to the event, we carry out a complete overhaul of the site, known as "deep cleaning". Throughout the operating phase, i.e. during the event, our teams ensure that this level of cleanliness is maintained, the aim being to leave participants with a feeling of comfort. At the end of the event, a new deep cleaning is carried out to restore the site to a state of impeccable cleanliness," confides Yan Gouala.
