Onet Technologies and its partner MHI finalize the manufacture of 3 steam generators
Onet Technologies and MHI have been combining their expertise for over 20 years to supply replacement steam generators (SGs) for France's 900MWe nuclear power plants. After 5 triplets already delivered to EDF, i.e. 15 SGs, the manufacture of the 6th triplet has just been completed.
More than 30 people from Onet Technologies, including 15 on the calculation side and 2 employees based in Japan, were mobilized on this project.
Steam Generators are the largest primary circuit components to be replaced during the operation of nuclear power plants. Their dimensions are impressive: each SG weighs 350 tonnes, is 21 metres high and 4 metres wide! And their manufacture requires several years of study before the design is validated by the safety authority.
This success demonstrates Onet Technologies' high level of expertise, our ability to support major contractors on large-scale projects, and our mastery of French regulations governing Nuclear Pressure Equipment (NPE). These are the skills that will be at the heart of tomorrow's nuclear industry, both in the construction of new high-power reactors and in the design of new reactor models.
On this project, Onet Technologies was responsible for :
- engineering studies to validate the design and justify the behavior of the equipment in service,
- assistance with compliance with French regulations and standards,
- non-destructive testing as part of the Irradiation Monitoring Program (IMP), serving as a "0 point" of control during operation,
- in-plant inspections of European suppliers,
- on-site provision of GVs for the fitter.
The three steam generators will be delivered to EDF in 2026 for installation at the Cruas nuclear power plant.
Onet Technologies' expertise in steam generators
The success of this project and the expertise of its employees position Onet Technologies as a major player in the nuclear sector, not only for existing plants but also for the construction of new nuclear power plants and innovative nuclear reactors (SMR).
This expertise is backed up by over 40 years' experience in steam generator maintenance. Like, for example, our Integrated Steam Generator Service (ISGS), which provides high-pressure steam generator cleaning and sludge filtration.
Onet Technologies' skills have been put to good use even after the steam generator has been in operation in a power plant: the company's teams recently submitted the bowl for a steam generator as part of EDF's Sherlock project. This world first was a real technical challenge for the teams.
