Onet Technologies builds a decommissioning workstation for the disposal of irradiated fuel

This was a delicate project, as the main constraint identified was the hypothetical presence of water in the cases, with a possible release of hydrogen that could cause a risk of explosion. The main challenge for Onet Technologies was to ensure that the proposed de-storage scenario eliminated any trace of water potentially present in the cases during transfer. Another challenge was to guarantee a vacuum drying process prior to shipment in specific IR200-type packaging to the LECA STAR facility.
with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and technicians from our different businesses.
The tasks entrusted to us were broken down into several stages: our process, radiation protection and safety Technical Units produced an investigation report to establish the current state of affairs. The next step was to carry out a series of studies, supported by our remediation and dismantling specialists, on the treatment of casings and over casings using a punching technique at the bottom of the pool.
This was followed by studies on drying and effluent recovery techniques, as well as on the gases potentially contained in the cases. Tests were carried out on our Pierrelatte site by our teams to validate the punching and drying functions.
Finally, teams from the Mechanical Engineering Unit were involved in the design of the operating station, comprising a set of equipment dedicated to the decommissioning function, for the safe transfer of fuel from the pool.
Once all the studies had been completed, Onet Technologies was in charge of the follow-up for the realization and testing phases, as well as the qualification of this equipment on the customer's site.
Onet Technologies would like to thank the CEA for entrusting us with this highly technical service, as well as all our business teams involved in the project, who carried out these operations on schedule.
