Jules, on an internship in Japan, has developed a chatbot for the Japanese nuclear industry.

Jules, a work-study student in mechatronics at Onet Technologies, is currently on an internship in Japan, working with our team there. Discover his portrait, in which he shares his experiences, perspectives and future aspirations, highlighting his three-year journey with Onet Technologies and his current project during his internship in Tokyo.

Onet Technologies seemed to me to be the company where I would grow the most.

Hello Jules. Could you tell us about your background and experience at Onet Technologies?

I did a Bac S (back when that still existed), then a PTSI preparatory course. I wasn't too keen on theory during my preparatory course, and I wanted to work, so a work-study program seemed like the obvious thing to do. At the end of my work-study program, I applied to Mines d'Alès and was selected. After that, I had several interviews, and Onet Technologies seemed to be the company where I would flourish the most.

I've been with Onet Technologies for almost three years now, joining in September 2021. I've worked on a number of projects in the mechanical department, and over time I've broadened my skills to include programming and electronics in various other projects! In particular, I worked on the digital twin project for the tank 71-21D.

Why this internship in Japan?

I wanted to go abroad as part of my engineering school to experience life outside France. I knew that Onet Technologies had a subsidiary in Japan, and I'd been secretly hoping for an internship there since the start of my work-study program! One day, I was told that a place was available, and after an interview, I was chosen to go there for a total of three months! My placement finishes at the end of August 2024.

What are your on-site missions?

My main mission on site was to create a chatbot in the same style as ChatGPT, enabling people to ask questions to documents made available by Japanese nuclear players. This allows my colleagues working on projects linked to the dismantling of Fukushima Daiichi to easily find the answer to their question among the thousands of documents made publicly available!

Although my background wasn't originally in artificial intelligence, I learned what I know today by browsing the Internet on a self-taught basis. I learned a lot, especially about programming, even though I already had a solid grounding in it.

I also had the great privilege of taking part in a technical visit to Reactor 5 at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant as part of a study project led by Onet Technologies.

Onet Technologies' support has enabled me to take part in innovative projects, often beyond my initial area of expertise.

Overall, how was your experience in Japan?

It was really great, my colleagues made me feel very welcome and this country is a big change compared to France! This is exactly the kind of experience I was looking for when I did an internship abroad. What's more, Onet Technologies supported me financially for this internship, and I'd like to sincerely thank the company.

Onet Technologies' support has enabled me to take part in innovative projects, often beyond my initial area of expertise, which has contributed significantly to my professional development.

Your three-year work-study program at Onet Technologies is drawing to a close! What would you like to do next?

I'm currently in discussions with Onet Technologies about a possible future career with the company. Later on, I'd like to move into humanoid robotics, but in the short term, I'd like to stay in the nuclear industry, as it's an exciting field that I haven't yet explored in all its facets!

Jules' experience in Japan illustrates Onet Technologies' ability to offer unique opportunities to its work-study students, enabling them to develop and explore new facets of their field of expertise.

We'd like to thank him for all his hard work during his work-study programme, and wish him every success for the rest of his career!
