Scaffolding training: safety at height

Would you like to find out more about scaffolding training? Read this article to find out more about scaffolding training: objectives, target groups, aims... and find out more about the training organizations offering this type of apprenticeship.

Scaffolding training in detail :

Working on one or more types of scaffolding requires skills acquired through compulsory training, in accordance with article R4323-69 of the French Labor Code and the Order of December 4, 2004.

No training is compulsory, but it is essential that every worker who has to use, assemble, check or dismantle a machine is trained, depending on his or her activity and use.

There are two major organizations: Institut National de Recherche et de Sécurité (INRS) and Syndicat Français de l'Echafaudage, du Coffrage et de l'Etaiement (SFECE). They award their certifications to training organizations offering training that meets regulatory requirements.

INRS distinguishes between 2 main categories of scaffolding, and assigns a specific skills reference to each. The R408 standard applies to foot scaffolding, while the R457 standard applies to rolling scaffolding. To be recognized by the INRS, training courses must meet these standards.

SFECE applies to all scaffolding formations of all categories and types. But above all, including those over 24m.

For scaffolding training courses, the organizations (INRS and SFECE) recommend renewing training courses every 5 years at most.

Article R4323-3 of the French Labor Code specifies that : "The safety training provided to workers responsible for the use or maintenance of work equipment is renewed and completed as often as necessary to take account of changes in such equipment."

Focus on the R408 recommendation

The R408 recommendation is a skills reference that enables you to acquire the knowledge and know-how needed to intervene and work on scaffolding in complete safety.

The Caisse Nationale de l'Assurance Maladie des Travailleurs Salariés (CNAMTS) issued the R408 recommendation for fixed scaffolding training. This regulation implies a number of rules that enable workers to operate in the best possible conditions of safety and health protection.

Made mandatory in 2004, recommendation R408 "Erection, use and dismantling of free-standing scaffolding" defines the skills required of scaffolding erectors and fitters, as well as of those responsible for the design, acceptance and maintenance of scaffolding, and of personnel working on it.

This includes knowledge of the different types of scaffolding, assembly instructions, checks and maintenance, as well as safety rules for working at height. By complying with the R408, employers help to reduce the risk of accidents and ensure a safer working environment, promoting a safer and more efficient working environment for the well-being of all workers involved.
