Water savings in rolling stock cleaning at Keolis Dijon
Against a backdrop of dwindling water resources, and in order to optimize consumption, our Onet Cleaning and Associated Services Dijon team recommended that its customer Keolis install water meters to monitor volume and flow in real time, and to provide rapid notification in the event of abnormal consumption.

A context that encourages water savings
Long wrongly sidelined, what is commonly referred to as "blue gold" has in recent years come to the fore in the debate on energy efficiency, decarbonization and reducing the environmental footprint of businesses. Water restrictions in the event of drought have become commonplace throughout the world, including in areas known for their high rainfall. This has the effect of creating an imbalance between water needs and resources, and, within companies, of accelerating the decision-making process aimed at saving this increasingly scarce resource.
Quite simple, common-sense steps can be taken: study water consumption and use, map the company's water circulation network, detect leaks, combat wastage...
Cleaning water-consuming rolling stock
By its very nature, public and rail transport is a response to today's climate challenges. Trains, subways, tramways and buses help to replace the need for cars and trucks, and their GHG emissions, by enabling the movement of large numbers of people and goods.
This awareness of their positive impact has for many years committed public transport and rail operators to reducing their environmental footprint as well as their energy consumption: through eco-driving, the installation of LED bulbs in stations and stations, or by reducing their water consumption.
At Keolis in Dijon, the rolling stock fleet comprises the 183 vehicles of the KEOLIS Multimodalités network, Dijon Métropole's service offering which includes 2 tramway lines, 7 high-level bus lines and 13 bus lines.

The cleaning of vehicles carried out by our teams represents one of the main areas of water consumption, with 80 m3 consumed per year.

A solution based on water meters
To support our customer Keolis in its drive to reduce its environmental footprint and optimize water consumption, our Transport Business Sector and Onet Cleaning and Associated Services Dijon team recommended the installation of water meters, enabling real-time monitoring of volume and flow, and rapid notification in the event of abnormal consumption. Connected to each water point, they enable consumption to be tracked separately, and to be notified by SMS or e-mail in the event of abnormal consumption.
This action illustrates the support we provide to our customers committed to exemplary environmental performance.
The advantage of these meters is their autonomy. In fact, a micro-turbine generates the energy, eliminating the need for batteries. With virtually infinite energy at their disposal, they communicate in real time, providing alerts and monitoring consumption. The device is linked via a box to an application for monitoring consumption and alerts.
Connected water meters can also detect possible leaks if consumption is recorded at a time when there is no cleaning operation.
This more virtuous management approach meets the challenges posed by the increasing scarcity of our water resources, and illustrates the support we provide to our customers committed to exemplary environmental performance.
Environmental and economic benefits
This management system, based on connected water meters, delivers environmental and economic benefits, such as lower water consumption, increased employee awareness of water savings and reduced washing costs, with a rapid return on investment.
Well done to our progress-oriented team, and thank you to our customer Kéolis Dijon for the trust it has placed in us.
