Case study: Laveran Military Hospital in Marseille
Build a pool of trained personnel to ensure the hospital's business continuity.
Being a bio-cleaning service provider in a hospital means being part of the care chain and the patient journey. Therefore, anticipating absences and identifying a pool of qualified staff to fill in are essential factors in the quality of our service. Davy Colella, Director of Onet Cleaning and Associated Services agencies in Marseille, offered the Laveran Military Teaching Hospital a day of discovery and awareness-raising about cleaning professions, particularly bio-cleaning in hospitals. Organized with our Healthcare Business Sector and with the agreement and support of the client (Outsourced Services Management Department), this day enabled eight people in the process of reintegration to discover the world of bio-cleaning. It illustrates the type of solutions that can be implemented with the collaboration of GEIQ PROPRETE PACA.
Continuously build a pool of new agents
In the healthcare sector, more than in other sectors, replacing cleaning staff requires forward planning. Indeed, being able to carry out cleaning and disinfection operations in accordance with quality and safety objectives in a hospital setting requires specific training.
At Onet Cleaning and Associated Services, every agent is trained in bio-cleaning and infectious risk when working in a healthcare setting (hospitals, nursing homes, specialized care facilities, etc.) thanks to mandatory initial training developed with INHNI in 2022.
The training enables staff to adopt a responsible professional attitude appropriate to the hospital environment, for example by learning about the diversity of the microbial world, understanding the risk of infection and modes of transmission, identifying the protocols to be applied depending on the environment, determining the appropriate products and equipment to comply with the protocol applied, etc.
The training also aims to teach cleaning techniques and methods that comply with defined protocols: the sequence of actions, but also the sequence of rooms, which changes daily depending on the proven risks of contamination (application of Standard Precautions and Additional Precautions). The agent must be able to prepare and carry out their work according to the rooms assigned to them and the inherent infectious risks.
Building up a pool of trained staff is therefore an absolute necessity in order to be able to provide replacements when/as soon as necessary and guarantee continuity of service. In the healthcare sector, cleanliness is of paramount importance in maintaining a visually and microbiologically clean environment, thereby ensuring the safety of patients, medical staff, and visitors.
A day of awareness-raising in a real-life hospital setting, organized in partnership with the Laveran Military Teaching Hospital.
Building strong partnerships with our clients, as is the case with HIA Laveran, allows us to offer on-site immersion programs for potential recruits from integration programs. Developed in collaboration with our client, the immersion day allowed several speakers to take turns conveying key messages. Laeticia Dos Santos Pereira, Operations Manager, and Hayet Ledjedel, Site Manager, described the services provided on a daily basis by the Onet Cleaning and Associated Services team.
The eight participants followed our agents around the healthcare departments to learn about the bio-cleaning services provided in hospital rooms.
Participants were also able to try out the scrubber-dryers... Throughout the morning, emphasis was placed on the need to strictly adhere to current protocols in order to control the risk of infection and ensure a safe care environment.
In the afternoon, Emilie Joigneaux (Health Expert Hygienist) and Maeva Volpi (Health Expert Project Manager) spoke to the participants. They also emphasized the importance of following hospital hygiene rules and washing hands.
To raise awareness among their audience, they organized two practical workshops on the transmission of microorganisms via the hands. These interactive sessions reinforced all the professional practices observed during the morning.
This educational contribution raises awareness of these crucial issues in hospitals, which form the basis of all bio-cleaning services.
A much-appreciated day
The participants all thanked the organizers for the opportunity to take part in this day of discovery and awareness-raising at the hospital. Their profiles had been selected in advance by GEIQ PROPRETE PACA, led by Pierre Yves Bourveau, based in particular on their apparent interest in the cleaning industry.
The GEIQ (Employers' Group for Integration and Qualification) is an association of member companies that have come together to find solutions to their recruitment needs based on the concept of integration. It recruits all types of people, of all ages, with or without professional experience. Those recruited by GEIQ PROPRETE PACA will follow a program consisting of professional training at a training organization and work within a member company such as Onet. It is therefore well-versed in the pre-selection process.
It is clear that the GEIQ made an excellent selection: at the end of the day, all participants expressed their interest and enthusiasm for the profession of healthcare cleaner.
They enthusiastically shared what they had learned from their day:
"We must be there for the patient,"
"You need a high level of professionalism to work in a hospital,"
"Protocols must be strictly followed because microbes are invisible," "Clean from top to bottom and from cleanest to dirtiest,"
"Wearing professional attire is a real necessity."
etc.
Essential prerequisites and points to watch out for
To work in a healthcare facility, you need to be aware of the risks that must be controlled, for yourself, for the environment, and for others. All bio-cleaning agents must be aware of the risks in order to control and minimize them as much as possible.
These are the messages that health experts have been conveying. Enhanced medical examinations and specific vaccination requirements apply to our staff, as they work in a high-risk environment. The risk of exposure to blood and disease transmission is not insignificant, and preventing these risks is essential, explained Emilie Joigneaux.
In an environment where patients are often carriers of microorganisms, the risk of contamination is very real. Beyond prevention, our agents must know by heart the necessary protective measures and procedures to follow in the event of exposure to a biological agent, added Maëva Volpi.
They also informed them that certain services are performed in sensitive locations, such as morgues, which house the deceased, and operating rooms with significant biological contamination. Any employee who cannot tolerate this proximity must mention it when applying for the position. This situation is not a deal-breaker, but management must be made aware of it. Communication and listening are essential during the recruitment process.
Sharing the challenge of recruitment, a key element in driving effective action
Even though all participants were very positive at the end of the day, not all of them will necessarily join Onet Cleaning and Associated Services another cleaning company. Before that, they will have to undergo training, which may take the form of a work-study program with the support of the GEIQ. This will be a trial period for them, as well as for their future employer. The awareness day they have just attended is therefore only the beginning of a process aimed at leading them to stable employment. Field immersions are a way for them to explore sectors that are often little known.
However, it is a key step that should enable them to confirm their desire to commit to this training process. It was made possible thanks to effective communication between the Onet Cleaning and Associated Services teams Onet Cleaning and Associated Services their contacts at the Laveran military hospital, and a shared belief that building a pool of future cleaning staff is crucial to ensuring business continuity. By involving his client in a key issue for our profession, Davy Colella was able to mobilize his contacts within the hospital and thus contribute to the safety of patients, medical staff, and visitors.
Well done, everyone!
