Onet provides security for the Pope's visit to Marseille!
Discover the hybrid security system (human + electronic security) deployed by Onet to secure the Pontiff's route during his visit to Marseille from September 22 to 23.
As part of the Pope's visit, Onet was asked to provide security at the following locations (in order of visit):
- Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica
- Palais du Pharo
- Avenue du Prado
- The Orange Vélodrome stadium
- The esplanade of the Cathédrale de la Major
Around 85,000 people attended the Pope's papamobile tour and mass at the Orange Velodrome stadium.

Co-construction of the system with public safety
6,000 police officers and 1,000 private security guards were mobilized for the event. It took several months of preparation in collaboration with the police, in particular for the logistical aspects (means of transport, itinerary, unmarked areas, etc.).
300 Onet Security agents were deployed at the various sites affected by the Pope's visit. Onet's management team was in direct contact with the team coordinating the security continuum for the Pope's visit, in order to adjust the operation and allocate tasks between Onet Security and the police forces.

Deployment of an electronic and human device at the Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde
For the first leg of his visit to Marseille, Pope Francis went to the Basilique Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde to take part in a prayer in the company of Marseille's diocesan clergy, more than 500 people strong.

The Diocese of Marseille wanted to reinforce its electronic security system for the occasion. Our experts carried out an in-depth study of the video surveillance systems already in place on the site: site visit with Onet agents, analysis of the Pope's itinerary and the configuration of the site, identification of sensitive areas...
This upstream study made it possible toidentify the additional security needs of each area and to select the appropriate video surveillance cameras. The cameras were installed by our technicians. The system was designed to be maintained after the visit, in order to increase the detection capabilities of our agents.
Onet has been providing human security for the Basilica since 2021. For the Pope's visit, 25 security agents and 10 SSIAP 1 agents were mobilized to ensure the site's security and fire safety. On-site management was provided by 3 team leaders, supervised by the service coordinator.
Safety and security at the Palais du Pharo in the spotlight
The day after his visit to the Basilica, the Pontiff met the President of the Republic at the Palais du Pharo in front of an audience of over 1,500 people, before holding private talks.
Onet Security helped guarantee the safety and security of the Palais :
- 25 security guards controlled access to the Palais, checking journalists' identities and authorizations, using magnetometers and palpation to prevent the presence of prohibited items...
- 25 SSIAP 1 operatives were on hand for fire prevention, technical rounds (maintenance of rescue equipment and SSI) and personal assistance, working closely with the Marseille fire department.
4 mobile security guards reinforced the site's perimeter security to prevent any intrusion.

Handling a large flow of people for the papal procession and mass
130 Onet agents provided security for the Pope's papamobile on the Avenue du Prado and at the Stade Orange Vélodrome. 8 team leaders and 3 coordinators were on hand to supervise the agents.
The whole of the Prado district was cordoned off, with traffic and parking prohibited to allow a 1 kilometer stroll in front of more than 25,000 people. Public areas were cordoned off to prevent any intrusion, and to facilitate access screening by our agents.
30 hosts and hostesses Onet Reception carried out pre-screening on the Orange Velodrome's Ganay forecourt, scanning spectators' tickets. The hostesses were accompanied by security guards in charge of screening (palpation and magnetometer). This hybrid system ensured a smooth flow of spectators. Inside the stadium, our agents kept an eye on spectators in the stands.
Securing the Esplanade de la Cathédrale de la Major
During the weekend of the Pope's visit, the esplanade of La Major cathedral hosted the Rencontres méditerranéennes village, with over 80 exhibitors.
Visitors were able to enjoy free access to catering areas, dance shows and choirs... 10 agents Onet Security controlled the entry and exit of people and vehicles. They used vehicle mirrors to check the chassis of exhibitors. A canine agent was also on hand to provide general surveillance of the village.
Efficiently coordinate all our teams
To perfectly coordinate all these sequences throughout the papal visit, a specific chain of command was organized between the different hierarchical levels of all our teams in the field (site coordinators, operations managers and branch managers) to ensure rapid transmission of instructions.
