Extending the service life of nuclear facilities with NDT

Head of the NDT R&D Cell, within the DISR department of Onet Technologies
What project did you apply to France Relance for?
The project submitted to France Relance is entitled "CND innovants pour l'extension de la durée de vie des installations nucléaires et le nouveau nucléaire".
The aim of this project is to develop and industrialize innovative technological solutions to meet the new challenges facing the nuclear industry: more efficient, faster, more reliable and less polluting controls, with fewer radiological risks and guaranteed data traceability. Some of these technologies could also be applied to industry in general (petrochemicals, hydraulics, etc.).
How is this project a project for the future of the nuclear industry?
From construction to end-of-life, nuclear power plants age, and inspection operations must be carried out to guarantee plant safety and personal security. To extend the lifespan of nuclear facilities, increasingly thorough and precise checks must be carried out, while reducing the environmental impact and radiation exposure of operators.
EDF needs players who can offer them new industrial solutions. Inspection techniques need to be more efficient and more accurate, in order to detect ever-smaller faults, but also to avoid being too conservative (artifact/actual fault discrimination), the aim being to replace components when necessary.
In order to meet the new needs of the nuclear industry, Onet Technologies will - through this project - develop and industrialize innovative control processes, particularly for corrosion detection and weld inspection applications during maintenance, with the ultimate aim of extending the service life of nuclear installations.
