International Food Safety Day

Cleaning in the agri-food sector, a key challenge for food safety

The sixth World Food Safety Day will be celebrated on June 7, 2025. This day is an opportunity to draw attention to the subject, encouraging action to prevent, detect and manage food-borne risks. To mark the occasion, Onet Cleaning and Associated Services, a leading player in hygiene and cleaning in the agri-food sector, is organizing an event in which prizewinners can win a sanitary audit of their facility.

Why an International Food Safety Day?

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are joining forces to promote International Food Safety Day, in collaboration with Member States and other relevant organizations. This International Day is an opportunity to redouble our efforts to ensure the safety of our food, to put food safety on the public agenda, and to reduce the burden of foodborne disease worldwide.

Food production is a complex activity that can affect consumer health

Feedback from health crises shows that without a strong food safety culture, any company remains vulnerable to the "human factor" or human error, whatever its size, experience, resources and preventive measures, embodied in its food safety management system.

Food safety is not just a matter of analysis and methods

This culture must be underpinned by staff training and awareness-raising. However, these actions alone cannot guarantee an appropriate food safety culture. It must also be based on other pillars, such as staff feedback and SDA (food safety) performance measures, communication, and of course be supported by a "driving" Food Safety Culture Leadership.

Food Safety Culture is therefore as much about behavior and mindset - particularly the notion of integrity and ethics - as it is about the procedures and other resources implemented as part of management systems.

How cleaning and hygiene help prevent food-borne risks

Cleaning in the agri-food sector plays a crucial role in the prevention of food-related risks, through a variety of actions.

  • Removing contaminants: Cleaning removes residues, dirt and contaminants from infrastructure, surfaces, equipment and utensils used in food production. This reduces the risk of cross-contamination between food and contaminated surfaces.
  • Micro-organism control: Cleaning procedures, especially those using disinfectants, help to eliminate bacteria, viruses, fungi and other micro-organisms that could contaminate food. This reduces the risk of food-borne illnesses such as food poisoning.
  • Maintaining hygiene standards: Regular, thorough cleaning of food processing facilities ensures compliance with hygiene regulations. This includes cleaning food-contact surfaces, processing and packaging equipment, storage areas, the manufacturing environment, etc. Treatment of these areas minimizes the risk of contamination and pathogen proliferation.
  • Allergen prevention: Cleaning also reduces the risk of food allergens by removing allergenic food residues from surfaces and equipment. This helps avoid cross-contamination that could endanger allergic consumers.
  • Compliance with regulations: Health regulations impose strict hygiene and cleaning standards in the agri-food sector. By maintaining rigorous cleaning practices, agri-food companies can comply with these regulations and guarantee the sanitary safety of their plants.

In short, cleaning and hygiene in the agri-food sector are essential to prevent food-borne risks by eliminating contaminants, controlling micro-organisms, maintaining a high level of hygiene, eliminating allergens and complying with health regulations.
